Installation of biomass-fueled boilers for rural homes and businesses
Heating for homes and businesses where natural gas is unavailable and heating oil is too expensive. If you own a rural home or business in the interior of Alicante, Valencia, or Murcia, you already know what we are talking about.
The days of biomass are numbered
What we are about to tell you is something that very likely no one else in the sector will say; after all, biomass is a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source. So, telling you that it might not be for you might not sit very well with you.
But it is the truth. At Davofrío, we believe that biomass as a fuel is only truly effective in certain situations. That is why we only recommend it to businesses and clients in very specific circumstances.
Homes or businesses with no access to the natural gas network. Located in places with winters that are harsher than coastal people can imagine. Having to pay for heating oil or propane at a price that rises every season and shows no signs of stabilizing.
In those cases, the situation can be studied, and a biomass-fueled heating system may be recommended.
Biomass is not always the most recommended option to heat your home, no matter how sustainable it may be.
A biomass installation could be your solution if you find yourself in one of these situations
A detached home in the interior with no access to natural gas.
A house in L’Alcoià, El Comtat, Alt Vinalopó, Vall d’Albaida, or any inland region with real winters. With no natural gas connection. Currently heating with heating oil, propane, or electric heaters.
You could use a biomass pellet boiler system with an automated hopper to heat your entire home and produce domestic hot water, with an annual fuel cost between €600 and €900 for a 150-square-meter property.
Olive oil mill or estate with olive production.
This is the case where biomass offers the clearest profitability of all heating technologies. If you have your own olive stone production, you have almost free fuel that you are likely managing as waste right now.
A boiler designed for olive stones converts this by-product into thermal energy for the production process, the facilities, or the home linked to the farm. In these cases, the return on investment is difficult to beat with any other technology.
A rural hotel, restaurant, or business in an inland area.
An establishment that requires intensive heating during the winter season without access to natural gas may be facing energy bills month after month that squeeze its profit margins.
Biomass offers a predictable and stable operating cost, with no exposure to the price spikes of heating oil or propane. Moreover, in rural establishments, a pellet or wood system provides added brand image value for a customer profile that appreciates consistency between the environment and how the business operates.
A few questions that can help you clear up whether biomass is right for your business or home
At Davofrío, we do not install biomass for everything. There are situations where it is the technically and economically most sound option on the market, and situations where it is not. Telling you this upfront is part of how we work.
When does it actually make sense to invest in a biomass system?
When you do not have access to natural gas and your current alternatives are heating oil or propane. When you have your own production of olive stones, wood chips, or other organic residue that you can use as fuel. When you only need heating and domestic hot water, and space for the fuel storage tank is not an issue. When the utilization horizon of the installation is long-term and the return on the initial investment can be clearly calculated.
When does it NOT make sense to invest in a biomass system?
When you have access to natural gas or already have a properly installed aerothermal system. When the available space does not allow for a fuel storage tank adequate for the demand. When you are looking for a solution that also cools in the summer: biomass heats, it does not refrigerate. In those cases, aerothermal technology or a hybrid system is the most efficient solution.
Is pellets the right fuel?
It is the standardized, high energy density, and automated loading fuel. The boiler operates autonomously for hours without manual intervention. The price ranges between €280 and €320 per ton in bulk, with an annual consumption of 2 to 3 tons for a 150-square-meter single-family home. The supply is predictable and the market is well-established. It is the most common option for residential housing.
Is olive stones the right fuel?
High calorific value, low or zero cost if produced on the farm itself, and local availability throughout the olive-growing area of the interior of Alicante, Valencia, and Murcia. It produces slightly more ash than pellets, which implies more frequent cleaning, but in well-designed installations, this maintenance is routine and low-cost. For olive mills and agricultural farms with their own production, it is, technically, the most profitable fuel on the market.
How do we execute a biomass installation at Davofrío?
The process is the same one we apply to any HVAC project: calculation first, equipment second. An oversized boiler operates in short cycles that degrade it prematurely. An undersized boiler fails to reach the setpoint temperature on the coldest days. Correct sizing is what separates an installation that works from one that disappoints.
Our goal is for you to stop checking the thermostat and worrying about what every single degree is costing you.
A well-installed pellet or olive stone boiler runs silently, feeds itself, and provides constant heating. The fuel is locally available, its price does not depend on international markets, and the annual cost is predictable from the very first year.
That is what Davofrío offers you. An installation that disappears from your radar because it simply works.
Having a biomass system means living through the winter without the anxiety of the heating oil bill.
